New domain, new theme, new RSS feed

Quick update that is important for anyone following this site via RSS.

I’ve finally made the move to a more sensible domain name - http://devonwhittle.com (no more confusion over who James is), and I’ve also found a great new theme that I installed at the same time.

More importantly, the domain change means the RSS feed has changed. This may be the last post you see unless you change your RSS subscription to point to here. Things might still keep working without the change, but better to be safe than sorry.

Things might pick up here after Christmas, but I’ve got 12,000 words to write for university before then, so busy enough right now to not think about blogging.

Just a quick post as I’ve got lots of work to do now here in Chambers.

It’s been hard to find the time to keep updating this blog, especially with confidentiality requirements that means I’m unable to post about the most interesting topics I deal with, but I’ve been doing a lot of tweeting lately, so you could check there if you are interested in a more real time update.

It’s mostly updated during the working week, although not really about the ICTR. Be warned it also contains lots of minutiae, personal messages and random off-topic links.

Searching International Criminal Law Case Law

I’m currently wrestling with the case law databases of the ICTY and ICTR and think there must be an easier way to find what I’m looking for. The best I’ve got so far is to do a site search via Google. If you know of a better way, please let me know!

In the meantime, I’ve made a Google Custom Search Engine that (hypothetically) is limited to the case law websites of the ICTY, ICTY and ICC – without having to remember all the Google search syntax.

It’s a first attempt so my syntax may be a bit off, but I think it does the job to an ok standard.

Future potential includes adding more ICL databases, allowing ‘refinement’ to only certain Tribunals, etc.

If you have any suggestions let me know, or join as a ‘volunteer’ and add them directly.

Next three weeks in Geneva

Tonight I’m heading to Geneva for three weeks! I’m doing a subject called Institutions in International Law, run by Dr Andrew Mitchell, Bruce Oswald and Dr Tania Voon, wherein we visit a variety of international institutions to learn how they work and more about international law.

It’s going to be an absolutely amazing experience, but may mean blogging is on hold for a bit depending on how easy it is to access the internet in Geneva (and how much spare time we get). When I get back I’m sure I’ll have a ton of posts to do about what we learnt over there.

WTO Law Moot – Break from blogging

Fantastic news! I was recently accepted into the University of Melbourne 2008 WTO Moot Court team! What that means is that we’ve been given a hypothetical problem based around GATS and international trade law and we’ve got to do some written and oral submissions in January and March respectively.

What is also means is that for the next few weeks blogging is not the highest priority so expect less long posts and probably the same amount of miniposts. I’m throwing around some ideas about a post on WTO law so we’ll see what happens.

In the meantime I’ll leave you with a quote I found a few days ago which I found very inspiring:

Wow am I surprised/flattered. Trawling through my logs I noticed this article on the Hindustan Times website – they quote “an Australian blog – www.james5.org” about Blackle, the “energy saving” Google. I guess this blog’s getting some street cred
