United States of Africa: the AU's next steps?

I haven’t been able to find much on this, but here’s an interesting idea from the AU Chairmen – the United States of Africa. It’s not a new idea, and I wonder if a continental wide union is best. Also, it seems to me that ‘African solidarity’ often means bad governments aren’t told off as strongly as they should be.
