GetUp's How Should I Vote
November 19th, 2007 • Australia, Noteworthy, Political, Resources
GetUp have launched one of those “answer these questions and we’ll tell you how to vote” sites called HowShouldIVote?. I love these sites, and this is an interesting implementation of the general idea.
The survey is easy and quick, just 20 questions plus one at the end where you pick your top 3 issues. They say it should take less than 3 minutes and the interface is beautiful to use. Issues range from childcare to education to drug policy to refugees to Iraq and everything in between. It was designed with the help of a veteran pollster and I think covers just about all the major issues.
The clever part comes once the survey is done, GetUp have also asked the candidates in all electorates to fill the same survey so that you can get matched up percentage wise with the exact person you’ll be voting for on November 24th. Check out my results below:

As you can see not many candidates have actually filled in their surveys yet, the site is young, so it’s only been able to rank me against the Greens and Labor (all the others are in random order). The site gives you a percentage rating against all the candidates and actually returns a “how to vote” card based on your answers. So come polling day I can literally just fill in the ballot boxes like the card says. Too easy!
You can also sign up to get e-mail and SMS updates as other candidates fill in their surveys. Can’t wait till more get done, then I can see where my representatives really match up against my values.
Some gripes, mostly because the site is new. I wish I could save my actual percentage results page somehow to show to family/friends/blog readers. I’ve done the survey three times now trying to take screenshots and show Clare my resutls. Also, the Facebook app, while a good idea, doesn’t seem to be working very well at the moment.
Hopefully GetUp can get the bugs out of the system and get candidates to fill in some surveys then this site could become quite helpful.
