Good News for Fair Trade at Safeway
November 3rd, 2006 • Australia, Melbourne
It’s not always easy to find a fair trade option when out shopping. While Coles and Safeway have started to stock a limited selection of options (with Coles often only in the health food section), and IGA always having at least Green & Blacks on offer, it’s still pretty hard to find fair trade from a mainstream store (i love Macro!). So it was nice to get this MMS from my fiance:

It’s a promo for Scarborough Fair Tea at Safeway in Lilydale! Sure it’s just a few boxes on the end of a row, but that’s pretty good for an Aussie supermarket. And it’s only $5 for 100 bags, which is a pretty good price – but People For Fair Trade could give you a better deal.
That said, I encourage you to take a look at your local supermarket and give them some support if they do have fair trade available. Even just talking to the person who is at the big front desk is good, I had a good chat with a lady at Tunstall Square Coles who didn’t even know they sold fair trade!

Thanks for the tip. If you do shop at IGA’s, many of them around Melbourne do stock Universal Village Fairtrade tea, which is not plantation grown but grown by small holder farmers. Some IGAs also stock Fairtrade coffees and Cocolo Fairtrade chocolate – so visit your local one and grab some! (or you can always get your Fairtrade tea and coffee really cheap at People for Fair Trade, and the warm and fuzzy feeling will probably last a bit longer!)
